It could be a dozen fighting for Bkt Selambau

ALOR SETAR: The Bukit Selambau by-election could turn out to be a 12-cornered fight judging from the number of people voicing their intention to contest.Kedah Election Commission director Zainal Abidin Zakaria said the number of candidates wanting to contest was unusually high.

“So far seven independent candidates have paid deposits (RM5,000 each for candidacy and RM3,000 each for election materials).”

The independent candidates who have taken their nomination forms are ;

former Kedah PPP Wanita chief L. Sarala, 34;
businessman T. Chandrarajan, 40;
contractor R. Loganathan, 43;
and businessman Tan Hock Huat, 46.

Others are businessman Zaharan Abdullah, 39;
retired army personnel Mohd Fadzli Wahab, 38,
and Major (rtd) Anuar Abdul Hamid, 58.

Three other independent candidates who have expressed their interest but have yet to take their nomination forms are ;

former PKR Zon Mawar chief Mohamad Radzuan Mat Isa, 52;
former Malaysia Indian Muslim Congress adviser Datuk Thasleem Mohd Ibrahim, 59;
and businessman M. Vaneson, 34.

Barisan Nasional is fielding S. Ganesan, while Pakatan Rakyat is expected to announce its candidate on March 28, a day before nomination day.

The Bukit Selambau seat fell left vacant following the resignation of PKR’s V. Arumugam on Feb 8. Of the 35,140 voters here, about 50% are non-Malays.Polling is fixed on April 7.
